Girl Videos
Spring 2025
Created by: Kate Blackwood, Sofia Nyiri, Ava West
Role: Director, Co-Writer, Co-Editor
Type: Experimental Documentary Film
Brief: According to the Oxford Dictionary girlhood is defined as, "the state or time of being a girl," but I find it much broader than that. Girlhood is a spectrum - it is not limited to an age, a culture, or an experience. My team wanted to capture the pureness of girlhood..
Inspiration: We took visual inspiration from Justine Kurland's "Girl Pictures" (1997-2002) which we thought captured the essence of the community that is built from girlhood.
Structuring: Since our visual narrative was already laid out, we decided it best to divide the film up into sections. One of friendship, one of self, and one of memory. Our title cards were heavily inspired by Stella Blackmon's work as shown in the images below.
Execution: We each asked friends and family members to answer a set of questions that we felt would resonate with the story we were telling and recorded them to add a personal element.
Tool Kit: Adobe Premier Pro, Canon XA50, Zoom H4N Audio Recorder
